NEWS RELEASE

76th “101” COUNTIES Checker Tournament

The Illinois “101” Counties Checker Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday on October 2nd and 3rd, 2010 at the Illinois Centre mall, in Marion, Illinois. This tournament has an interesting story behind it and how it was started. In the early 1900’s the checker players in Chicago dominated the Illinois tournaments. The down state players arranged a tournament that would exclude the players from Cook County. There are 101 counties in Illinois, hence the Illinois “101” Tournament was born. Then in 1973 the tournament became “open” so all players could participate. There used to be several hundred checker players in Illinois, but now most of them are gone. This year tournament will be divided into three classes, expert, major and minor for the beginner checker players. Registration will began on Saturday at 8:00 a.m., the business meeting at 9:00 a.m., with play to start at 9:45 a.m. We will play four rounds Saturday and three rounds on Sunday.

The public is welcome to attend. Come on out, bring the family, and watch the “Checker Players” demonstrate the beauty and depth of this (SIMPLE) game. Young and old, beginners and experts can find hours of enjoyment playing checkers.
